    Canon 40mm f2.8 pancake lens?

Due out sometime. a 40mm pancake lens f2.8. I have no idea what this lens does, or what it will be used for. Maybe someone with can enlighten me . My best guess is that this is a macro lens....

I think it comes down to smaller flatter lens makes lugging the camera around easier. I know if I'm going out with the kids I'd rather have my 35 f/2 on my D700 which is tiny rather than my 24-120 f/4 or even 50 f/1.4 which are pretty hunky lenses. Other than that it's just a 40 f/2.8. Same thing goes for the 4/3, small zoom bodies with decent to great image quality.
