Thread: Nikon 28mm f1.8 AG-S FX lens

    Nikon 28mm f1.8 AG-S FX lens

Normally, I would consider a 28mm lens kinda of useless.... like the red headed prime stepchild to the 24mm, and the 35mm....
28 is just not as wide as the 24, or as versatile as the 35. However, as an FX lens at 1.8, Dependant on price, this could be a great value lens.

The current 35mm 1.8 are fantastic, sharp, quick af, fantastic in low light, and CHEAP!!!! The only downside, it is branded as a DX lens, and thus have limited use in FX cameras. The 35mm 1.4 version.... even better, but at a cool 1800 dollars..!!!! w t f!?! 28mm 1.4? forget about it, unless you have 4000 dollars lying around.

Introduce the 28mm, 1.8 AF-S. If this lens goes the way of the 35mm 1.8G, FX users will be in for a real treat. Sharp, Quick, WIDER, and hopefully affordable.

Hmm, I have the 28 f/2.8 AI-S but I'm thinking if this comes out it would be a great addition to my 24-120 f/4 for when I need the additional speed without wanting to blow the bank on 24/35 f/1.4's as nice as they are. This is still a hobby for me at this point and that's some serious scratch for the f/1.4's.

Okay... so the 28mm f1.8 is officially annoucned. The retail price..................

    $699.95

All in all, I would say the price is moderately priced.... maybe even fairly high when you compare it to the nifty 50's, and the Crop Sensor 35mm. But you are paying for an official full frame (FX) lens.... and we all know how much those can be. Not bad... IF my D800 ever comes in, I might pick one up, when my wallet recovers.
    Cheers!

Yup, $750ish Cdn, that's the US price although I'd expect the Cdn one to drop a bit at retail. This is one of those lens ranges that I find interesting. I have the 28 f/2.8 AI-S which is a great lens especially for near/medium distances. Depending on how this performs I may be interested in picking one up used on Craig's / Kijjijjiijjijijijijijijijijijijijijiji once people start dropping them for a couple of hundred cheaper.

LoL, I dont know about kijiji/craigslist..... the prices amaze me sometimes. I've seen people try to justify selling used stuff for retail price saying you save on the taxes..... (if its a camera), when i ask for actuations, they reply, just 10000 or so... i took some test shots.... lol,
    Cheers!

to be fair, that happens on photography forums a lot too. Items sold at same price as retail, used product, but they claim you save on taxes or shipping.
I always thought it was strange that people would buy at retail prices without the assurances of returns, etc.

Too bad I just bought a 35 1.8G, the 28 would've been cool. Although at $700, I'm sure if it performs great, I'll pick it up so I don't need to get a 24 1.4.

Anyone have one of these yet? Still an intriguing lens and the price is so much easier on the wallet than the 24 f/1.4 which I've been eyeing.

what are people here actually using these for? Not landscape, not portraits.

    Just curious.

    I'd imagine landscape most likely
    Cheers!
