If you don't want to go full SSD you can try the Hybrid drives from Seagate - more capacity but similar benefits of full SSD. I have one and it works well.

For $1000, it's possible to do better, but since it's a prebuilt, the spec looks pretty good.
Putting in any sort of parts into the computer will mostly void your warranty, so you might want to debate against that. Also, the 23 inch monitor, like another member said, is a TN panel. Once you go IPS, you can't go back.
you are right about the warranty. Now I do have an extra machine that I can play with, I forgot the specs but I think it's still pretty good, it will probably serve as my 'everything else' pc.
as a guy with an uncalibrated monitor, i don't think I would go IPS anytime soon. I want to edit in a 'consumer' monitor, I wanna see what the average client would see

IPS monitor's, especially Dell's can be very cheap. You don't have to calibrate it once you get it eitherand you'll still see what everyone else can see, you'll just be able to see it from all sort's of angles as opposed to from just straight ahead. No colour shifting like TN panels. I paid less than $200 for my 22" dell on sale. Is it the best IPS monitor out there, no, but it's better than the $99 ones

finally getting this machine today (if it's not delayed)!
I think mac is a bit over kill, the pc can do the same job as a mac when photo editing, but the mac is just very simple and easy to use
