I'm not having any luck with my lenses lately. The VR on my 70-300 seems to be broken and I hope I can get it fixed under warranty even though I'm not the original owner. Anyone have any luck with Nikon on something like this? I have the original Henry's receipt which I'm hoping will help but.... you never know with Nikon.

I heard their facility out in Mississauga is pretty good, but no first hand experience myself.

What's wrong with it?

If it's under warranty, I don't think it matters if you are the original owner. Should be no problem.

I was shooting some birds in the backyard when I noticed that the VR wasn't turning on. I tried to clean the contacts and nothing, no stabilization. I tried my D700 with a couple of other VR lenses, 24-120 and 105 (been using the Sigma 50 f/1.4 a lot lately) and they work as expected.

I'll have to take a day off and head out to Mississauga to drop it off and see about getting it fixed. The lens was originally purchased in 2009 or 10 but has a 5 year warranty so hopefully I won't have any problem.

is it a henry's warranty or nikon's? don't you need to verify with henry's first (via phone call) and see if they'll honor the warranty?

It's a Nikon warranty. Nikon gives you 5 years on lenses or did. It was just purchased at Henry's (in Ottawa I believe). I should be able to take it into Nikon Mississauga and get them to fix it although in theory the Nikon warranty is not transferable on second sales.

When I brought my 70-300VR into Nikon Mississaugga, they asked for my receipt. They even photocopied the original I gave them. They then "registered" my lens using the contact info on the receipt. Not a problem for me since I am the original owner. I don't know how strict they are if your current info don't agree with your receipt info.

On a somewhat related note, when I called around recently trying to find a new D700 at the latest US price of $2199, I was reminded by a Nikon rep that Nikon Canada won't service US bought cameras. Nikon may be getting pickier with their service policies.

no, i thought it was always that way with non-service of US warrantied items.

They have notes on the service desk, basically imply they won't touch anything not bought from an authorized Canadian dealer with a 10foot pole. You can't paid them / beg them to look at your Nikon stuffs if they are not bought from an authorized Canadian dealer. I remember that notes are there for a few years.

On a different note, I brought an out of warranty second hand SB900 (it was bought in Canada, but I don't have the invoice with me), they can check the serial number can confirm it is from within Canada and they service it, at my expense, of course.

Yup, that's my understanding as well. Nikon Canada will not service items purchased outside of Canada (although I've heard them bend on this a little). Same with Nikon USA, anything purchased outside of the US not imported in by them is considered Grey Market items.

Luckily for me, my lens is Canadian, I'm just not the original purchaser so the question was more around warranty transfer than grey market.

It is what it is. Nikon Canada and Nikon USA are different companies that purchase directly from Nikon HQ. Each have their own books. Nikon Canada tries to sweeten the deal with longer lens and body warranties over Nikon US but they have no obligation to work with each other.

yes, the same with canon... canon us and canon canada doesn't really work TOGETHER...

Canon Canada is now pissed off Canon US, because MOST Canadians are buying from U.S.. I think they're starting to prohibit Canadians from buying from US stores like BH and Adorama (can't pay with Canadian credit card)
